Jane Fonda's Weight

Academy Award winner Jane Fonda has a new exercise video coming out.

Ms Fonda has a history of anorexia and bulimia but says she's absolutely healthy now. I hope that's true. i've always kind of felt sorry for her. She never seemed very happy or comfortable with life or her body. Her husbands cheated on her, she got breast implants and now she says she's had more work done.

Still, she says she's happy and healthy -- that's according to an interview I just read in People magazine

Here's what worried me. Ms. Fonda says she now maintains 121 lbs on her 5'8 body. That, in itself, sounds awfully thin. Then i wondered, knowing that she's 121, not 120 or 125 or about 120ish, suggests that she's really watching that scale. From there, i wonder if she's 121 on every scale, her scale, her doctor's scale...

Something about Jane fonda always makes me sad. This was no different

  1. I also read the article in People, and thought the same things. She sounds just as obsessed with appearance as she ever was.

  3. I find it sad that she is constantly being defined by her looks and her weight. The other week I saw a photo of her on some chat show wearing a leather skirt and they newspaper went on about how great it was she was so slim.

I mean, she once was a politically outspoken feminist. What happened?

  4. that is very thin. I don't know that much about Jane Fonda....maybe I'll read that article.

P.S. I didnt comment on your last post but I just wanted to say that your letter to your sister was spot on! You were brave to write it but I think it hopefully not only benefitted your niece, but also honored your experience growing up in an appearance obsessed family.

  5. What happened? Hollywood and the unrelenting pressure to be thin is what happened. And to think this is a woman who could have made a difference, but instead chose to throw it away on her looks.

If her stats are correct - and nobody except somebody obsessed with their weight would be that exact - she has a BMI of 18.4, which is underweight.

    Sad.

  6. I grew up with an anorexic mother who always told me I was fat (pictures prove that I wasn't, in fact I was very tall and stick thin). I started dieting at the age of 11. I was also bulimic in my teens and early adult years. At the age of 58 I am still dealing with the aftermath of my childhood. I felt like I was never good enough, thin enough, pretty enough.

I think you are doing a great service to both your niece and your sister. I hope your sis pays attention.

  7. I loved Jane Fonda when I was in my 20's and she came out with her exercise book. I wanted to feel the burn. But she does have some problems unfortunately. I guess that shows how difficult these issues are to overcome.

  8. I haven't read that specific article, but I did see her awhile back on tv, talking about her new exercise dvd. I actually saw her new dvd at Target the other day.

I agree it is sad that she is still focused on her looks quite a bit. Just goes to show how everlasting these issues can be.

  9. I, too, have always felt a sadness around Jane Fonda. I think she had some issues with getting her father's love and approval; that could have something to do with her weight issues. And yeah, 121 lbs for her height is way too thin, especially considering her age. Angela made a good point--she could have made a difference. Nice post.
